Weatherwise yesterday was miserable, grey and rain real February stuff. I knew what I wanted to do,I had seen a picture of a piece of amethyst and wanted to make a very textured piece. I love free cross stitch because you can build up such texture. Having said all that I am not satisfied with what turned out but it will have to do. One of the problems is that no matter how I photograph it I cannot get the metallic threads to show. The white band had an irridescent thread in it and the "amethysts" have lots of sparkle in them. Ah well another lesson learned!
Don't know whether I am going to stick with this jewel colour theme. The idea was to make me work with colours I wouldn't usually use but I find I have a tendancy to get hooked into the whole "jewel" thing and can't think outside it. Aquamarine is next for March, gorgeous colour, so we shall see.

Love the texture on this piece Pat. It looks more sparkly when you click on it to enlarge. I know what you mean about taking the photos though - they never look the same. I'm going to try scanning next, a lot of people seem to do that and get good results.
Like you, I can't get anything shimmery to photograph well. I think it's something that I need to spend some time really working on. I do like the piece you have done here - especially the colors!
Even a professional photographer can't get the sparklies to shine in a photo as they do in person.
I like how it turned out.
It´s have a lovely texture and colours! Yes, it´s very difficult to take good photos on metallthreads etc

re photo
have you tried bouncing the light with something reflective so that you can illuminate a specific spot?
neki desu
Shimmer or not I think this is nice --but I love anything purple
I love purple...anything! As soon as I saw it (before reading the text) I thought it was an amythyst even without it showing overly sparkly. Well done!
I like your idea of jewels Pat. Sometimes its good to have a 'theme' to follow, gives you a starting point if you get stuck for inspiration. It is also interesting to see how many interpretations you can come up with for one theme.
What a lovley texture created with cross stitch, which reminds me I'm behind for the first time since we started TAST. Not started mine yet.
Hi Pat, thanks for visiting my lunar post. Have you tried an artificial light, spcefically directed at the threads. possiblty from a very low angle. you'd need a bright spot light and some sort of mask or tube to limit the spread of the light. Or simple fill in flash might do it.
